Our recent project for a client involves the fabrication of a ship propeller mild steel rope guard that comes with custom stainless steel net cutters installed. ​

Rope guards are used to protect a vessel's propeller shaft from rope or net entanglement, net cutters installed on the rope guard acts as a cutting tool should any entanglement occurs.

What is a heat exchanger ? 

Heat exchangers on board ships are coolers where a hot liquid is cooled by sea water. The heat exchange process is done by having the two liquids pass on either side of a conducting surface which in this case is the tube walls. Two main types of coolers at sea are the "Shell and tube type" and  "Plate type". Other types like air cooled type heat exchangers , uses air as the cooling medium.

All sea strainers have a similar function, which is the straining of foreign objects to protect engine components such as water pumps, cylinder heads, and oil coolers. 

Mechanical separation of solid contaminants is achieved by the use of these filters and strainers. Normally a mesh screen and a stainless steel SS316 / SS316L perforated material are used in the fabrication of such strainers.

An example of fitting location is suction sides of seawater pumps to refine the flow of raw seawater. Fabricated usually in cylindrical or cone shapes, the basket is normally removable for easy cleaning. Cone-shaped screen basket provides even greater straining area.
